At Claire Hughes Dental, we proudly offer inlays and onlays as an extra measure for teeth that require a more robust filling solution.
An inlay or onlay is a filling that is created in a lab by a skilled dental technician. An onlay or inlay is a more conservative treatment for restoring teeth when the natural structure of the natural tooth cannot support a conventional filling.
Inlays and onlays serve similar purposes; however, inlays sit inside the tooth cavity – between the cusps. Onlays are bonded to the biting surface of a tooth and usually include one or more cusps. This is similar to a crown, yet slightly more conservative.
Onlays and inlays are usually made of composite resin or porcelain, and they can match your teeth in multiple shades to complement your smile. When extra durability is required, gold or zirconium may be used. Before creating your restoration, our team of dentists will discuss the types of materials and shades to be used.
Although white fillings can also restore cavities, they are better suited for more minor restorations. If the case requires a precision filling, inlays and onlays are more appropriate. Large white fillings are made in dental laboratories, and a high level of accuracy in their design reduces the likelihood of wearing and shrinkage.
